Dr. Walensky stated that the review will be focused on the core capabilities of the agency: The public healthcare workforce, data modernization, laboratory capacity, health equity, and rapid responses to diseases outbreaks and preparedness in the United States as well as worldwide.

Dr. Walensky stated in an email that “over the past year, many of you have told me that you would like to watch CDC build upon its rich history and modernize so the world around them,” She thanked her employees and said, “I am grateful to you for your efforts in leaning into the hard work of transforming CDC.

The C.D.C. has been admired for its scientific, methodical approach to improving public healthcare around the globe. Agency experts trained scientists outside the United States, and their standards have been adopted and emulated worldwide.

The agency’s infrastructure, just like the country’s public health system, was neglected for decades.

This has made it difficult to cope with the unprecedented pandemic. The C.D.C. made mistakes in testing and surveillance early on. The C.D.C. made major mistakes in surveillance and testing, such as the famously flawed design of a diagnostic tool that was sent to state labs.
