Officials didn’t recommend masking until too late, partly because the virus was not airborne and agency scientists weren’t able to recognize it quickly enough. In May last year, Dr. Walensky announced that people vaccinated could wear masks indoors and out. However, it was discovered that the virus could be transmitted from one person to another.

In August, Dr. Walensky joined President Biden to support booster shots for all Americans.

This was before scientists from the Food and Drug Administration and her agency had examined the data and determined whether they were necessary.

The C.D.C. has been influenced by the Omicron variant, which is highly contagious. The C.D.C. has issued recommendations based upon what was once considered insufficient evidence. This is amid growing concern from the public about how these guidelines impact education and the economy.

The C.D.C. reduced the time for Americans infected with the virus to five days. However, it seems that some people can carry the virus longer. Some experts have criticized the agency’s decision to change the metrics that are used to evaluate risk and to determine the appropriate local measures. This was done to please political and business interests.

Supporters of Dr. Walensky claim that the agency was given an exceptional task and that the C.D.C. It is doing its best in extremely difficult circumstances, not least because most of its employees work remotely.

Dr. Walensky issued a separate statement to the public Monday, stating that “CDC has never had to make such quick decisions in its 75-year history, based on limited, real-time and evolving science.”
