US Companies Will Pay Employees Travel Expenses Who Require an Abortion

After Friday’s ruling by the Supreme Court to overturn Roe V. Wade corporate giants from many industries promised financial support to employees and their dependents seeking abortions in states that ban the procedure.

The court’s decision not to reverse the landmark, nearly 50-year-old ruling that protected the federal constitutional right to an abort, will likely transform American reproductive health. It will leave abortion policy up to the states, and allow many states to adopt new restrictions. At least seven state officials indicated that new abortion bans could now be implemented as of Friday afternoon.

Millions of people looking for abortions may soon have to travel across states to get the procedure. This will increase the cost of already expensive healthcare services. Many people find that their only option for an abortion is to use the benefits offered by their employers.

On Friday, many more companies followed their lead.

In response, corporations, some with headquarters or offices in Republican-controlled states, are taking action. After a May draft of the opinion was leaked, companies such as Match Group (MTCH), Salesforce (CRM), and Citigroup (C) promised financial support for employees who sought abortions in the affected state. Bumble and Lyft were among those who previously stated that they would donate to organizations supporting women’s rights such as Planned Parenthood and Fund Texas Choice.
