Apple Confirms Severe New Problems for iPhone 14 Purchasers

It’s been a rough start for iPhone 14 owners. Apple released iOS 16.0.1 yesterday to fix data migration and authorization issues. Apple has also confirmed that FaceTime and iMessage are having issues.

Apple also acknowledged that “iMessage” and “FaceTime” might not be able to activate the iPhone 14 or 14 Pro, in new support documentation. It also acknowledges that problems may still arise even after iOS 16.0.1 has been updated.

Apple stated that after setting up an iPhone, “you might experience one of the following problems”:

  • You cannot receive iMessages and FaceTime calls.
  • When you send a message from another Apple device, you will see a green message bubble rather than a blue bubble.
  • Conversations in Messages appear as two threads instead of one.
  • The recipients see that your messages are coming from an incorrect account. If you have selected your number, your email address may be shown.

The issues are obvious, but the solution is not. Apple’s support document recommends users upgrade to iOS 16.0.1 “to fix this”, however, a) these bugs do not appear in the iOS 16.0.1 release note, and b) Apple suggests alternative steps if they are still causing problems after you update.
