People in Australia See the Moon Upside Down

People who live in the Northern Hemisphere are familiar with a particular view of the Moon. If you don’t travel to Europe, North America or Asia, this view would not change.

You will notice something strange about the Moon when you travel to the Southern Hemisphere. The Moon is upside down, relative to the Northern Hemisphere. The Moon will also be upside-down if you are used to seeing the Southern Hemisphere skies.

Many portraits of the Moon are oriented the same way as you would see them from the Northern Hemisphere. This orientation is not fundamentally different from the Southern Hemisphere orientation. However, we have been referring to North as “up”, for so long that it has spread to the entire solar system. It makes sense to show the Moon “right-side-up” with the view from North.
