Brazil Fines Apple $19 Million for Selling iPhones with No Chargers

Apple’s decision to stop including a charger in new iPhones is intended to reduce the amount of electronic and packaging waste. It is unnecessary to bundle a charger with every new iPhone because many consumers already have a charger that works with the device. It shouldn’t surprise that Apple plans to appeal the decision (Opens in a new browser).

It is not the first time Apple has been penalized in Brazil for failing to include a charger with its smartphones.

A $ 2 million fine was issued in March 2013 for the iPhone 12, not including a charger. Brazil’s Ministry of Justice has ordered Apple not to sell iPhones in Brazil without charging cables, saying that the company is selling consumers an inferior product.

It is hard to believe that Apple hasn’t done this before and started offering a discounted price for customers who don’t want one. It would encourage Brazilian consumers to reduce their e-waste and avoid further legal action.
