Zelenskyy shows the physical toll that war can take on the body

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the Ukrainian President, toured Bucha’s devastation this month. There were bodies of civilians in the streets and buildings were destroyed. His haunted face seemed like a reminder of the horrors of Russia’s war against Ukraine.

The normally shaven face of the 44-year-old was now lined and bearded. His forehead was scrunched in pain and his eyes were covered with heavy bags.

These are the most obvious signs of trauma or stress that can be seen in anyone, especially in wartime. Glenn Patrick Doyle, a trauma psychologist, says they can also be present in other areas.
