Scientists Have Created ‘Living Skin’ For Robots.

Kawai and colleagues wrote that “Building perfusion channel within and below the dermis equivalent to imitate blood vessels to supply water and the integration of sweating cells in the skin equivalent are important directions to pursue future research.”

They also suggest adding sensors and “nerves” to lab-made skin so it can be multi-talented like ours. This will serve as a protection and sensory organ.

Takeuchi says, “We were surprised at how well the skin tissue conforms to the robot’s surface.” “But this is only the beginning of creating robots with living skin.

Researchers hope that robots will appear more human-like, which will allow us to relate to them better and help us communicate with them in the medical, care and service industries. If artificial humanoids can be developed beyond the uncanny Valley, then that is a possibility.

The researchers concluded that these findings demonstrate the potential for a paradigm shift away from traditional robotics and towards a new scheme of biohybrid robots that harness the benefits of both living and artificial materials.
