Quantum Computing Could Have a Greater Impact Than You Think

2013 was the year Rigetti Computing started its quest to create quantum computers. Friday’s company statement indicated that this effort could yield serious results starting in 2023.

The reason is that the Berkeley, California-based company will deliver its fourth-generation machine Ankaa and an expanded model called Lyra next year. According to Rigetti founder Chad Rigetti, chief executive of Rigetti, the company hopes that these machines will bring about “quantum advantage,” which is when the machines with radically different designs mature into devices that can deliver results beyond the reach of traditional computers.

Quantum computers use the strange physics of ultrasmall elements such as atoms or photons to do calculations that are impossible on conventional processors. These computer processors power smartphones, laptops, and data centers. Quantum computers could lead to better vehicle batteries, new drugs and more efficient delivery of packages, as well as other breakthroughs.

Quantum computers have been very costly research projects so far.

Rigetti is one of many groups trying to gain the quantum advantage. This includes tech giants such as Google, Baidu, Intel, and IBM, along with specialists such as Quantinuum and IonQ, PsiQuantum and Pasqal.

Rigetti stated, “This is the new race in space,” in an exclusive interview before the company’s first investor meeting.

The company will reveal more information about its technology, including its manufacturing process and hardware. It will also provide details on the cloud services that it uses to reach customers. Rigetti stated that the company is building the complete rocket.
