If you were to visit Mars, you’d hear higher-pitched sounds slightly sooner.

“The sounds of an orchestra travel at the same speed on Earth. They reach you at the exact same speed no matter how high or low they are. Imagine Mars. If you are too far away from the stage, you will experience a delay,” Sylvestre Maurice, the study’s principal author, explained to France’s AFP news agency.

Because of Mars’ thin atmosphere, sounds travel a shorter distance. They drop off at approximately 213 feet on Earth, while they stop after 13 feet on Mars. This would make it difficult for you to converse with someone just 16 feet away. NASA has assembled a collection of sounds that Mars would make, including ocean waves and birds. Recordings These images give an idea of how a Martian-like atmosphere could change our perceptions of the world.
