“The kick-out comets took residence in Oort Cloud,” a vast reservoir filled with far-flung comets that surrounds the Solar System.

Man-To Hui of the Macau University of Science and Technology described the comet as “an incredible object”, adding that “we guessed the comet might have been pretty large, but we needed the most data to confirm this.”

Comet Bernardinelli-Bernstein has been following a three-million-year-long elliptical orbit, taking it as far from the Sun as roughly half a light-year.

The comet lies less than 2 billion miles from our Sun. It is almost perpendicular to the plane of the Solar System.
