David Jewitt, professor of planetary science at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA), said that “we’ve always suspected that this comet was big because it is bright at such large distances.” “Now, we confirm it.”

Nasa, which describes the icy dirtball as a behemoth “barrelling this way”, has named it Bernardinelli-Bernstein after its discovery by astronomers Pedro Bernardinelli and Gary Bernstein.

It was only a decade ago that they first saw it while working at Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory Chile.

Nasa describes comets as “icy Lego blocks”, a remnant of the early days of planet construction.

It stated in a statement that the “they were unceremoniously tossed from the Solar System in a gravitational pinball match among the massive outer planets”
