Many of the 30 million Americans living with diabetes would see significant benefits from the bill. Insulin is a lifesaving medication that is usually taken every day. Many diabetes patients have had to ration or stop taking it because it has become more expensive. According to a Kaiser Family Foundation analysis, about five percent of Americans who use insulin would benefit from the proposal.

The insulin bill is a significant setback in Democratic efforts to reduce high drug prices for all Americans.

The Senate has blocked a larger prescription drug package. It would reduce price increases for all prescription drugs, increase Medicare’s generosity in drug coverage, and allow the government to negotiate directly with Medicare on price. This will also limit insulin co-payments.

The bill’s broadest parts would also expand insurance coverage and extend insulin coverage to diabetic patients who are not insured. The House bill passed on Thursday will not increase insulin affordability for those without health insurance.
