An Android 12 build will still be on your phone even after you flash an Android 13 factory picture – which is different from sideloading an OTA image – on the Pixel 6 series. This is because of Android’s A/B system updates which are intended to provide redundancy.

Two sets of partitions are used to update A/B systems. These are called slots. The current slot is used by the system, and the system does not access the partitions in an unused slot during normal operation. This makes updates more reliable by using the unused slot as a backup: In the event of an error during an update or right after, the system can rollback back to the old slot to continue with a functioning system.
