An A.I.-Generated Image Won An Art Prize Artists Aren’t Happy.
The annual Colorado State Fair art competition awarded prizes in all categories, including painting, quilting, and sculpture. Jason M. Allen, Pueblo West (Colo.), was the only entrant. He didn’t use a brush or a piece of clay to create his entry. The mid journey is an artificial intelligence program that transforms lines of text into hyper-realistic graphics. He created it.
His work, “Theatre D’opera Spatial,” won the blue ribbon in the contest for emerging digital artists. It was the first A.I.-generated piece to win this prize and sparked a furious backlash from artists who accused him, essentially, of cheating.
On Wednesday, Allen reached out to him by telephone and defended his work. He stated that he had made it clear that his work, which was submitted under “Jason M. Allen via Mid journey”, was created using A.I. and that he didn’t deceive anyone about its origins.
He said, “I’m going to not apologize for it.” “I won, and there were no rules I broke.”
A.I.-generated artwork has been around since. Tools like DALLE 2 and Midjourney, as well as Stable Diffusion, have made it possible to create photorealistic or complex works of art by simply typing in a few words.
Many artists are now worried about their futures because these apps make it difficult for them to create art themselves. These apps have also sparked fierce debates over the ethics of A.I.-generated artwork and opposition from those who claim they are essentially high-tech forms of plagiarism.
Mr. Allen, 39 years old, started experimenting with A.I.-generated art in the new year. Incarnate Games is his studio and he was interested in the new A.I. He was curious about how image generators would perform against the works of human artists that he had commissioned.
He was invited to a Discord chat room to test Mid journey. This complex process, known as “diffusion”, transforms text into custom images. Midjourney allows users to send a series of words and the bot will return an image within seconds.
