In a March 25 release , the ATA stated that drivers are in high demand today. Fleets must raise pay to attract and retain drivers. This is happening at an extraordinary level.

The trucking association stated that “we’re seeing unprecedented pay increases across industry”, with weekly driver earnings rising at a rate greater than 5x their historical average — more than 25% up for long-haul truckload drivers since 2019″ and adding that some fleets offer five-figure sign on bonuses and benefits to compete for a small pool of drivers.

Walmart also announced the creation of a program to train truck drivers. The 12-week program, which began in Texas and Delaware, has already allowed supply-chain workers at Walmart to obtain a commercial driver’s licence and become fully-fledged private-fleet Walmart truckers.
