Surprise appearance by Zelensky of Ukraine at the Grammys
Before Legend took to the podium, Zelensky stated, “On our land, we are fighting Russia. Which brings terrible silence with its bombs,” before Legend took to stage. Fill the silence with your music. Fill in out today — to tell your story. Share the truth about this conflict on social media and on television. We need your support. You can do anything, but you must not be silent. Then peace will be achieved.”
Zelensky is a worldwide hero for his leadership, calling out from the streets and inside bunkers in Kyiv to act during Russia’s invasion in February. Zelensky gave a virtual address to Congress last month.
A visit by the president of Ukraine was being considered for a high-profile Hollywood awards show, but it didn’t happen.
Oscars co-host Amy Schumer stated that she had suggested to producers for the show, requesting that the Ukrainian leader appear last Sunday.
Schumer stated, “I wanted to find an easy way to have Zelensky-like satellites in, or make tapes or something, just as so many eyes get onto us.”
Instead, the Academy Awards broadcast a pro-Ukrainian message during the ceremony. It stated that the global community “can do more” to aid Ukraine in the midst of Russia’s military offensive.
