Stuart Appelbaum (president of RWDSU), said during a conference call with reporters that “this is only the beginning” and promised to continue fighting. “We believe every valid vote should be counted, and every objection heard.”

RWDSU is doing better in Bessemer, regardless of the outcome. It did not do well last April at the first warehouse union election, losing by more than 2-to-1. After finding that Amazon had interfered with the labor law process, the National Labor Relations Board ordered another vote.

RWDSU reported that only 39 percent of 6,100 eligible workers at the Bessemer warehouse took part in the election. This is down from 52 percent last. Appelbaum pointed out that Amazon’s annual turnover rate is around 150 percent. This means that many of the workers who took part in the previous election may not be working for the tech giant.
