The device also has a video feature called “astrohyperlapse”, which allows users to take time-lapsed motion photos, such as of star movements, without the need for any special equipment.

Samsung also highlighted the new device’s gaming capabilities, claiming that users will be able to play longer due to its more powerful battery. The S23 Ultra has a massive 5,000 mAh (or milliampere-hour) battery.

The S23 Plus and S23 have 4,700 mAh and 3900 mAh batteries, respectively.

Wednesday saw the company unveil its new Galaxy Book3 laptop line, which includes a third Ultra model sporting a 16 inch AMOLED display. The Galaxy Book2 was available in two models. Samsung is hoping the new laptops will be a big hit in the premium PC market.

Software that allows users to drag and drop files between their smartphones and laptops was demonstrated by the firm. Samsung also revealed that users can pair the Book 3 with Samsung tablets in order to use the latter for a second screen.

The smartphone market is facing tough times

The launch of the company’s new products comes at a difficult time in tech for consumers. The demand for premium smartphones has slowed, as people are choosing to spend less on expensive gadgets because of rising prices and tighter budgets.

According to IDC, the global smartphone shipment dropped 18.3% to 300.3 million units in the fourth quarter of 2022. This is a period of high holiday shopping and the biggest drop in one quarter.

IDC reported that 1.21 billion smartphones were shipped in 2022. This is the lowest annual shipment since 2013.

Paolo Pescatore, PP Foresight, told CNBC via email that “Everything’s heading in the wrong direction to consumer electronic providers.”

Samsung posted its third-lowest quarterly profit since 2014. Samsung reported an operating profit of 4.31 trillion won ($ 3.4 billion), a 69% decrease from the previous year. Samsung claimed that its performance was hindered by low demand for memory chips and smartphones of mid- to lower price ranges.

Many people also suffer from smartphone fatigue. They aren’t satisfied with the improvements offered by newer models and they keep their phones longer.

“As with all flagship launches in recent times, customers who upgrade from older models or from a middle-range device will experience the greatest benefit from Samsung’s new devices,” stated Leo Gebbie (principal analyst for connected devices at CCS Insight).

Customers who purchased a premium-tier smartphone in the past year or so will not notice any difference between their current device and the new Galaxy S23.

Samsung has simplified its smartphone offering by consolidating its portfolio. The firm incorporated its S Pen stylus in the Galaxy S22 last year, symbolically ending its Note series.

With its foldable phones, Samsung has also attempted to increase consumer demand for premium smartphones. Last year, Samsung launched two new foldable models the Galaxy Z Flip 4 (and Galaxy Z Fold 4).
