New devices must have USB-C charging ports before 2026, according to the E.U.

The move was deemed to reduce electronic waste by policymakers. Apple and other companies opposed the new law, claiming it would stop new charging technologies being developed. The law establishes a European standard body that will oversee the development of future charger designs for all devices.

You can use one charger in Europe for all your new smartphones, tablets, and laptops.

All new smartphones, tablets, digital cameras and portable speakers will require USB-C charging ports by 2024. The European Commission announced. The law will also apply to laptops by 2026.

To reduce the amount of chargers out there, companies will be required to sell their devices without chargers. According to the European Commission, which is the executive body for the bloc of 27 nations, chargers discarded or unused create 11,000 tons of waste every year.

“A common charger makes sense for all the electronic devices in our daily lives,” Thierry Brton, the European Commissioner who assisted in the negotiations, stated in a statement.
