TikTok’s rapid growth continues to push many apps, and Instagram to copy its features

Platformer described Artifact to be “TikTok text” and “even a surprise attack against Twitter.”

Systrom and Krieger launched Instagram in 2010 together. In 2012, Meta bought the app for $1 billion. In 2018, the pair quit Instagram. Reports at the time suggested that the departure was caused by tensions with Mark Zuckerberg regarding the direction of the app and a desire for it to be integrated into Facebook.

“One of Instagram’s key features has been its independence from Facebook and uniqueness. Debra Aho Williamson (principal analyst at eMarketer) said that the founders kept this secret from CNN.

Platformer reports that Systrom and Krieger created a venture focusing on the future of social apps. Artifact is the debut product of that venture.
