Watson Coleman stated that they were standing today for those people, regardless of whether their colleagues on the opposite side acknowledge it or not, who are being discriminated against in schools, at work, and in housing applications. He also spoke on Friday morning from the House floor.

She said that this demonstrates the necessity of the bill’s existence because people in authority believe that because your hair is messy, braided or in knots, you aren’t worthy of access to these issues.

She added that “well, that’s discrimination.”

Watson Coleman stated, “There is no reason to discriminate against anyone on any level based on the texture or style of their hair.”

She referred to Andrew Johnson as a Black varsity wrestler from New Jersey who had dreadlocks and was forced to make a decision in 2018. He could either cut his hair or forfeit the match.
