ChatGPT Has Been Down , but People Still Use It. Elad Gil, Google Alum, Says This Is Bad Silicon Valley Advice.

He also said, “If a product breaks all the time, but everyone keeps using it,” pointing out that he saw this in Twitter’s early days, and it’s what he sees now with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT is taking the world by storm

He said that many ideas won’t take off no matter how hard an entrepreneur puts in. He stated that Silicon Valley’s prevailing belief that “you should grind forever and then eventually something will happen” is incorrect, noting that people have lost years of their lives due to such “bad advice”.

He said that people end up spending years, years, and years working on something that doesn’t work. “Maybe it will work if you do these three tweaks and maybe it will be this month if we keep going,” he stated. It works in a small percentage of cases, but it does work for most people.

It’s true that entrepreneurs may need to push through difficult times during a recession. But, he said, “When times get good, the worst advice anyone can give someone is to keep going regardless of what happens.”

Gil stated that there is a huge opportunity cost to your time and that most things don’t work. You should decide when to give up and when to quit. It can be difficult to determine.

He’s found that when an idea is successful, it tends very quickly to work. This has been something he’s witnessed repeatedly with companies he worked for and invested in over time–and what he now sees with OpenAI/ChatGPT.

“The truth is that most companies, although not all of them, but the vast majority that I have been involved in that worked, ended with working fairly early. They just kept working once they got started.”

He has also seen others make the same realization.

“One thing that I have noticed is that when people finally get to work on something that is truly working, they are shocked at how much they had misled themselves.

He said that in the first case “you’re chasing everyone and every sale is gruesome” but that with the second it’s “Hey, people keep calling”. Until that happens, you won’t know what it feels like.
