She continued, “The other day we were at the grocery store.” I told her, “You can get a cupcake if your heart desires.” She replied, “No, you don’t need to. Look at all the food coloring.” The cupcake looks neon. We made them together later. She’s already having the lightbul moment about what she eats and how it affects her body.

Alves McConaughey insists that her children have also been teaching her lessons.

She said, “I am from a farming family – the relationship between seed and table was very clear from day one.” “But we never had a conversation about sugar. I was raised to eat as much sugar as I liked. I still struggle with this today. My husband and I both see that sugar was a topic they discussed early in their marriage. He will eat dessert, then say “I’m done.”

She stressed that it is not about restricting food, but about having healthy relationships with food and learning about its origins. “I want my family to feel empowered and make better decisions for themselves… I had my stash in the pantry. It was so secretive that I didn’t even know it. One day, while I was reaching for something, all three of my children said, “We got you!” What are you doing?! They said, “Don’t do that.” They’ve encouraged me to be more mindful of my food choices and find balance.

Alves McConaughey spends her time cooking with her Texas-trained helpers, but she also enjoys spending date nights with her husband.

She said, “Usually our date nights tend to be very chilled.” It’s all about creativity. Many times couples with large families think that date night must be a big romantic event or a big family trip. Sometimes, it’s as easy as a staycation. Or you could say, “I’m going to send the kids over so we can all stay home and enjoy a drink together.”

She shared, “I have this thing — there is a tree on my property.” Matt often says to me, “Let’s get together today before dinner and see the sunset under the tree.” We will just have a drink under the tree. It’s all about those small moments that you share in the midst of everything else. It’s all about the little moments that allow us to continue reconnecting.
