Americans Save $500 Million Monthly on Internet Fees

Americans can save half a million dollars per month on their internet costs by using a federal benefit that was passed as part of the bipartisan infrastructure bill. Vice President Kamala Harris will make this announcement Monday in South Carolina.

This represents an increase of 40% since the federal government launched the website last May to promote the program. More than 16 million households in America are now enrolled in the AffordableConnectivity Program.

This is a positive sign for the White House which has been eager to show tangible benefits from the recent flurry of legislation. Recent polling shows that Americans are not aware of the benefits and projects included in the legislation. President Joe Biden frequently spoke about his hopes that Americans will have a better perception of his administration as the legislation is implemented.

Harris will also announce specific initiatives to increase internet access for minority students. According to a White House fact sheet, Bloomberg has learned that the Commerce Department will award a $175 million award to Harris for internet access, equipment and training. This money will support colleges and universities that serve disproportionately minority students.
