Android Makes It Easy for Thieves to Steal Your Google Account.

Apple and Google make it easy to load all our lives onto phones. All information is protected by advanced authentication. If you are unlucky enough, it is the authentication method that unlocks your phone. This weak link can allow you to access everything inside. Although we don’t want you to be scared into taking unnecessary actions, there has been a significant increase in coordinated iPhone thefts over the past few years. We believe upgrading your passcode from a numerical one to at least an alphabetic one is wise.

Joanna Stern of The Wall Street Journal reports on increasing phone thefts. This can be due to some level of social engineering. They can read and recall your passcode, whether it’s simply observing you entering it in plain view or requesting to share the photo you took. It can happen to anyone.

These quick moves are not just for the purpose of selling your device on an open market. Users only need to provide authentication on their device. The thieves can then access your personal information to steal from cloud storage and siphon off bank accounts. They can also use that information to defraud others using their stolen identity. However, the victim won’t be able to recover control of the account because the information has been altered.
