A Japanese Woman Was Tricked into Paying for an Astronaut’s Return Ticket

In a recent scam, a 65-year-old Japanese woman paid $30,000 to defy gravity. According to local media, the con artist convinced the woman that he was an astronaut from Russia who couldn’t afford a return ticket.

They began chatting via Instagram on June 28. The scammer claimed that he was a cosmonaut aboard the International Space Station. For his inability to communicate at times, he blamed poor cell service aboard the orbiting station. The relationship quickly escalated after the fake astronaut declared his love for her and claimed that he would marry her when he returned to Earth. But there was a problem. He couldn’t get off the ISS unless he had enough money to return to Earth.
