Recent research has focused on the potential of far-UVC, which is able to destroy viruses in the air but not harm people.

It does not penetrate human skin or eye cells because of its shorter wavelength. The researchers found that it kills bacteria and viruses just as well due to its small size.

Recent years have seen scientists successfully test far-UVC using smaller experiments. This allowed them to use it in small chambers to study its effects on microbes and humans. It is the first time far UVC has been tested in large rooms, mimicking how it would be used.

Scientists created a chamber about the size of the room, and changed the air approximately three times an hour. After spraying a mist with bacteria in the room, they turned on the far UVC lamps.
