In just five minutes, more then 98% of the airborne microbes could be killed. Even after new microbes were inhaled into the room the safe level of microbes was maintained.

The cleaning effect was equivalent in that it changed the air in the room 184x an hour. It is possible to do the equivalent of 20 air changes in a typical cleaning room.

Kenneth Wood (lead author of the study and lecturer in Physics and Astronomy at University of St. Andrews) said, “Our trials produced extraordinary results, far surpassing what is possible using ventilation alone.” “Far-UVC lighting could make indoor spaces as safe as the outdoors on a sunny day at St Andrews in terms of preventing transmission of airborne diseases.”

Researchers found that the technology would be useful as it could work even if viruses changed – it would also work with future covid varieties, and other diseases, that have yet to been identified. Researchers stated that microbes will not develop resistance over time to drugs or vaccines.
