Oscars Reaction to Will Smith’s Slap: “Inadequate,” Academy President Admits
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ president (AMPAS), is customary to greet the Oscar nominees luncheon attendees in a warm and congratulatory manner.
Janet Yang, the new Academy President, had another elephant to deal with this year: Will Smith’s famous slap on host Chris Rock during March’s 2022 Oscars telecast.
“I’m sure that you all remember the unprecedented event at Oscars,” Yang, a veteran film producer, told attendees Monday at Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills (Calif.) via Variety.
“What took place on stage was completely unacceptable, and our response was inadequate. This experience taught us that the Academy must be transparent and accountable in all its actions. In times of crisis, you must act quickly, compassionately, and decisively for yourself and your industry. We can and should expect nothing less of us moving forward.
