NFL Owners Approve New Overtime Rules To Ensure That Each Team Receives A Possession

The NFL made sure that there won’t be another OT in which either side can have the ball. This was months after Josh Allen lost to the Bills in an overtime playoff thriller. As CBS Sports senior NFL reporter Jonathan Jones stated, league owners, approved new playoff OT rules. This means that postseason games will not end in OT until both teams have had the chance to score.

This offseason, the Colts as well as the Eagles proposed that both sides would have possessions in OT games. However, this rule will only be in effect for playoff games. Previously, if the first touchdown was scored in OT, it could end the game. However, both teams would still have the chance to possess the ball if they failed to score a TD. If the first team scores a touchdown, the second team still has the chance to possess the ball. However, they must match the points of the other team to extend OT.
