Georgia Football News and Notes

ATLANTA – Head coach Kirby Smart spoke on many topics Wednesday at the College Football Hall of Fame.

Mims trying to get a job

Smart was asked about the status for offensive lineman Amarius Mims. Smart had his name entered in the NCAA Transfer Portal, but actually visited Florida State before deciding to return.

“He has done a great job. Smart stated that he is a victim of what every child is: opportunity vs. working hard, fighting for his success and taking risks. He was doing well in spring, but then he suffered an injury. That made it difficult for him to practice from seven to eight. He was unable to fight for playing time because of the missed time.

Evidently, Mims is serious about earning that playing time ever since his return.

Smart stated that Smart has a remarkable work ethic and has been very positive since his return. Smart said that he is still athletically gifted, and seems to be more aware of the offensive aspects. He is very healthy.

Smart, Lanning staying engaged

Just over a month will separate Georgia and Oregon at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Despite the game being close, Smart and Ducks coach Dan Lanning have not stopped the phones from ringing between them.

“I have had lots of communication with Dan and that has made me feel more grateful. As a head coach for the first time, he has had to answer some questions. Similar questions to mine. Smart stated that they shared ideas and philosophies and will continue to do so.” Smart said, “We are not asking each other which plays we will run. Talking about more than 10,000 feet, the overriding themes are how you think it’s best or how you approach this with your teammates. All good coaches communicate with other coaches, I believe.
