The majority of children in this age group are not eligible to receive a Covid vaccination. However, the Pfizer BioNTech vaccine is authorized in the U.S. for use by persons as young as 5.

Moderna’s vaccine is only approved for adults.

Pfizer stated last month that it had delayed its application to the FDA to expand use of its vaccine for children under 5. It did so after finding that two doses of its shot failed to produce a sufficient immune response among children ages 2-4.

Young children receive 3 micrograms of vaccine from Pfizer, which is lower than the 25 micrograms Moderna recommended for this age group.

Pfizer stated at the time it would wait to receive data from a three-dose series on the vaccine because it believed three doses could provide greater protection.

Moderna is asking FDA for approval for two doses of its vaccine to children under 6 years old. However, the company stated Wednesday that it is currently evaluating the possibility of a booster dose to all children.
