Ketanji Brown Jackson Is Confirmed as First Black Woman US Supreme Court Justice

Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson was voted in by 53 to 47 in the U.S. Senate.

After a lengthy process, in which she was denigrated with racist and derogatory attacks on her judicial records but also revealed deep hope among generations of Black women lawyers who have struggled to break through glass ceilings in their field, her confirmation was confirmed by a historic 53-47 vote in the U.S. Senate.

In remarks made just before the vote, Sen. Chuck Schumer (D.N.Y.) said that “This is one of the great moments in American history.” Today, we are making a bold, important, and huge step along the well-trodden path to fulfilling our nation’s founding promise. This is a wonderful moment for Judge Jackson, but it’s even more important for America as we move toward a better union.
