John Carmack Quits Meta and Says, “This Is My End in VR.”

John Carmack, legendary game designer and rocket man, is resigning from Meta/Facebook after more than a decade of being one of the most prominent advocates for virtual reality.

Carmack was an executive consultant. He sent his farewell message initially to his colleagues via an internal memo. However, when this was part of the media leak, he decided that he would post the entire thing, including clarifications, on his Facebook page.

Quest 2 has almost everything I was looking for – mobile hardware and inside-out tracking. It also offers optional PC streaming. The Quest 2 screen is 4k (ish), and cost-effective. Millions of people still get value from our software, despite all my complaints. We have a great product. It’s a success, and successful products make the universe a better place. We could have made it happen a lot faster, and the outcome would have been better if we had taken different decisions. But we created something very close to The Right Thing.
