The RIAA created the Gold & Platinum Awards Program in 1958 in recognition of artists and to establish a standard for measuring the commercial success a sound record.

The Gold Record, which was 500,000 units in size, was trademarked by the program. It also established the industry tradition of awarding artists for their music sales success. The Platinum Award (1,000,000), MultiPlatinum Award (2,000,000 plus), and the Diamond Award (10,000,000+) followed. The RIAA established the Premios de Oro y Platino Awards in 2000 to honor Latin music, particularly songs and albums that contain more than 50% Spanish. Since 2004, the RIAA has been counting digital sales and on-demand streams.
