Washington selected Haskins with the No. 15th overall pick in Round 1 of the 2019 NFL Draft.

In a statement, Commanders co-owners Tanya Snyder and Dan Snyder were released. He was a young man with tremendous potential and a bright personality. It is not an exaggeration to say that we are devastated. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Dwayne’s family, as well as all those who loved and knew him.

Ron Rivera, Commanders’ head coach, said that he was “absolutely heartbroken” to learn of Dwayne’s passing. “Dwayne was an exceptional young man with a long and fulfilling life ahead of his. It is very difficult to express my sorrow. I am sure I speak for the rest. He will be missed. The entire team sends condolences, thoughts and prayers to the Haskins Family.”

Haskins struggled to establish himself as a franchise quarterback after becoming a professional. He went 3-10 as Washington’s starter in his first two seasons. The organization eventually released him during the 2020 season.

Haskins signed with the Steelers in January 2021. He was the third-string quarterback, behind Mason Rudolph and Ben Roethlisberger. Pittsburgh offered Haskins as a restricted free agent. This meant that he would be able to play another season in 2022.
