Donald Trump Tried to Pay His Lawyer With A Horse Once, A New Book Says

Ryan failed to succeed. The New York Times reported Trump said to Giuliani that he would only get “paid on the come”, referring to a wager in casino craps, which is basically paying for a successful roll.

Enrich’s book places special focus on Trump’s relationship with Jones Day (a huge US law firm) and the role played by Donald McGahn as a partner in Trump’s 2016 campaign.

It wasn’t all easy sailing. Enrich quotes a Jones Day associate who said that, in the early days, McGahn, after a Trump Tower meeting, McGahn stated: “These guys, are morons.”

Enrich writes that McGahn “disputed the quotes attributed him, especially the word’moron”. However, he has been reported as having called Trump “King Kong”.

McGahn was Trump’s first White House counsel.

He was a member of the rightwing Federalist Society and worked with Senator Republican leader Mitch McConnell on an unprecedented stacking of the federal judiciary with conservative Hardliners. This resulted in three Supreme Court picks.

After it became clear that McGahn had been cooperating extensively with Robert Mueller (the special counsel investigating Russian election interference) in 2018, McGahn resigned.

Enrich describes Trump’s “reputation of short-changing his lawyers (and bank and contractors and customers)”, but states that Jones Day was a case where Trump “against all odds paid and paid again”.

Contrary to Enrich’s description of the “morons” comment, Enrich’s story about Trump paying debt with his horse doesn’t identify the attorney.

Enrich describes Enrich as “a lawyer at white-shoe firms” who worked for Trump during the 1990s. He writes: “The bill came out to around $2m, and Trump refused to cover it.

“After some time, the lawyer lost his patience and showed up unannounced at Trump Tower. He was sent up by someone to Trump’s office. Trump initially was pleased to meet him, but he wasn’t sheepish about it. The lawyer was still steaming.

Trump scolded Trump, saying “I’m incredibly sorry.” “There is no reason why you haven’t paid us.”

Trump made some apologetic sounds. He then said, “I’m not going to pay your bill.” The lawyer was puzzled. Trump said, “I have a horse,” he continued. Trump continued, “It’s worth $5m.” Trump looked through a file cabinet and found what he claimed was a deed for a horse. The lawyer received it.

Enrich describes the stunned and angerful response of the lawyer, which led to him threatening to sue.

Enrich wrote that Trump “eventually coughed over at least a portion” of his debts.
