Black Adam Draws Negative Comments: Dwayne J. Johnson’s DC Film Is Repetitive’ and ‘Anti-Entertaining’

Although the DC Universe hierarchy may be changing with ” Black Adam”, the film’s critical reception is still low compared to the previous decade of superhero entries by Warner Bros.

Dwayne Johnson’s vehicle received reviews this afternoon. “Black Adam” currently holds a 32% approval rating among top Rotten Tomatoes critics. It is currently at 54% among the wider group of approved critics on the website. If the number of top critics is maintained, it would be the lowest figure for a DC movie since 2017’s “Justice League,” with a 23% approval rating. This film was so hated by fans that Warner Bros. ordered a revised version, “Zack Snyder’s Justice League”, in 2021.

Peter Debruge, cha ief film critic, admitted that the film’s purpose was to give Black Adam an introduction that is worthy of his respect. He also stated that it will be a good review for Variety.

Johnson’s performance has been praised by many, but others are less open to the origin story. “Black Adam” is the star’s first appearance as the anchor in a superhero movie, something that Johnson’s commercial success and chiseled body would indicate was inevitable.

The Guardian‘s Peter Bradshaw gave a light positive review of Johnson, stating that Johnson’s “massive bulk and planet-sized head, as well as his sly gift with deadpan humor, make him a great superhero.”

John Defore, a critic for The Hollywood Reporter wrote about the star’s long-held attachment to “Black Adam” and stated that “his passion project serves him well, setting up him for adventures one hopes will not be as predictable as this one.”

Joshua Yehl’s IGN review gave Johnson “top marks” for making his Black Adam as strong and powerful as the comics. But, he also criticized the film for having “undeveloped characters and an excessive amount of repetitive action scenes to the point that its half-baked discussion about what it means being a hero is lost among all the noise.”

After two hours of tedious table setting, there is no clear direction for DC’s cinematic destiny

Rolling Stone senior Editor and Film Critic David Fear said that Johnson’s “not even the enjoyment of seeing him enter into a blockbuster template he seemed destined for can make up” for how bland, flavorless, and incoherent this was.
