Black Adam Draws Negative Comments: Dwayne J. Johnson’s DC Film Is Repetitive’ and ‘Anti-Entertaining’

Alonso Duralde, The Wrap called the film “anti-entertaining” while describing it as “one of most visually confounding major-studio superhero sagas, with CG that’s assaultively unsophisticated and rapid-fire editing, which suckers the excitement right out of every fight sequence.”

Indiewirecritic David Ehrlich reviewed the film and opened his review by asking the question, “What happens when Hollywood’s most risk-averse star meets Hollywood’s riskiest movie genre?” It’s exactly what you would expect. It could be worse.

ScreenCrush critic Matt Singer called the film “pretty middling”, writing that it “plays as a committee-made product intended to zhoosh up the stagnant DC Extended Universe [with a huge star and a bunch of new heroes to spin off in future movies].” There is also less interest in actually seeing it.

Johnson teased bigger battles for his antihero, “Black Adam” while promoting the film. Online chatter has also been sparked by a leaked video of the film’s ending credits scene. This gives a hint at who Black Adam might face in the future.

Johnson stated that Johnson is not only starring in the film but that he sees himself as an “advisor” for DC Films. Warner Bros. has appointed David Zaslav as CEO. Discovery’s upcoming DC film slate has been a matter of careful strategy. Zaslav stated that Warner Bros. is looking for a leader similar to Kevin Feige to oversee the next decade’s comic book content.
