Austin Butler Pays Tribute to Mom in the ‘SNL Monologue

“Saturday Night Live” final show of the season began on a sweet note as host Austin Butler tenderly remembered watching the late-night comedy show with his mother.

“I love my mother, some of my favorite memories growing up were watching SNL every week. He was a “cripplingly shy” person who would do anything to make her smile — even if it meant imitating Gollum from “Lord of the Rings.”

He said that being silly with her was what “broke me out of my shell” and sparked his desire to become an actor. Butler was a child actor on Nickelodeon and Disney Channel. He played Elvis Presley’s role in Baz Luhrmann’s smash biopic “Elvis.”

Butler choked up, “Now my mother is not with us. But I have been thinking a lot about her this week, just picturing how proud she would feel that my son is now standing on the stage.”
