Nearly 300 people required an intensive care unit with a ventilator in order to breathe.

Professor Sir Chris Whitty, England’s chief physician, stated earlier this week that although the virus was putting pressure on the NHS, high transmission rates were not resulting in many intensive care patients dying or being admitted to hospital.

Covid has caused an increase in staff absences at NHS hospitals across England by 31% over the week leading up to 13 March.

Around 23127 employees in hospital trusts across England were affected by the virus. This is 2% of the total workforce.

To increase their protection against Covid, people over 75 years old and immunosuppressed may book a spring booster jab.

In England, people who want to test for Covid from their lateral flow will need to purchase one starting 1 April.

It is part of the government’s “living with Covid” plan.
