Tesla Megapacks Arrive to Hawaii with The Last State Coal Shipment

For years, Tesla has been installing batteries in Hawaii in an effort to achieve that goal. Hawaiian Electric is the company that works with Tesla on new giant battery systems as well as a virtual plant using Powerwalls.

We reported earlier this year that Tesla has deployed Megapacks in, a new energy storage facility that will replace Hawaii’s last remaining coal-fired plant.

Elon Musk, Tesla CEO, reported today that Megapacks were delivered to the projects at the same moment Hawaii received its last coal shipment.

The Kapolei Energy Storage Facility (KES) is right next to where the coal shipment arrived.

The Kapolei Energy Storage Facility (KES), once completed, will be one of the most powerful battery systems in the world. It has a capacity to store 185 megawatts/565 gigawatt-hours. This project is in partnership with Hawaiian Electric and Plus Power. The former chose to use Tesla Megapacks as the power source for the system.

It is estimated to contain 158 Megapacks.

The project was expected to become operational in September 2022, when Hawaii’s last remaining coal-fired power plant, located just down the road, will be closed.

The coal power plant is used for maintaining grid frequency, something Tesla’s energy storage devices have been able to do. KES aims to do the same thing as Tesla’s energy storage products.

It seems that Tesla and its partners are under pressure to complete the project on time since the coal plant will apparently start burning its last shipment.
