Miga stated that there had been “larger and more persistent gaps” in the map before now. These gaps were located in some very important regions.

Miga, a University of California-Santa Cruz genomics researcher, collaborated with Adam Phillippy of the National Human Genome Research Institute in order to organize the scientists to begin from scratch with a brand new genome. The goal is to sequence all of it, even the missing parts. The group, named after the sections at the very ends of chromosomes, called telomeres, is known as the Telomere-to-Telomere, or T2T, consortium.

Their research adds new genetic information and corrects errors to the human genome. It also reveals long stretches DNA that plays an important role in evolution and disease. A version was published last year, before being reviewed and approved by scientists.

Ting Wang, a geneticist at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, stated that “This is a significant improvement, I would think, of the Human Genome Project” and doubled its impact.
