McDonald’s decision to exit was perhaps the most symbolic. It decided this week to suspend its operations in Russia. It will temporarily close its restaurants at 850 locations in the country.

Many experts in Russia believe that the exodus does more to strengthen Russia’s isolation after its decision not to invade Ukraine. This is a return to when Russia was part of the Soviet Union and was almost completely excluded from the global economy.

“It’s really shocking reversal,” said Daniel Treisman (a UCLA professor who specializes in Russian politics, economics and policy).

He said that the Iron Curtain was coming down again or that a new kind of curtain was coming down. “I believe that Russians are horrified at the loss of connection to the world they have lived in for 30 years.”
