Robbie Coltrane, Hagrid from ‘Harry Potter,’ Has Died at 72

Coltrane has reunited again with Thompson for the six-part drama series, “Tutti Frutti,” which earned him his first British Academy Television Award nomination for best actor.

His first win was for “Cracker”, a television series that aired in the 1990s. The series, which was a crime drama, ran three seasons (1993-95) and two specials (the second one being in 1994).

Coltrane was naturally drawn to the role of Hagrid, which is a half-giant and half-human character. In one interview, Coltrane said that he knew the books and loved them because he used to read them to his kids.

“If you want to be an actor, you must do the voices. It’s what the children want. No monotones,” he laughed.

His performance as a gentle half-giant, who brought humanity and heart to the role, was what made audiences stick with him.

Coltrane spoke out about his experiences with the films and Hagrid’s influence in the HBO Max special, “Harry Potter 20th Anniversary Return to Hogwarts”.

“Everyone in the world would love a big, powerful, strong, and good man to be on their side. It’s as simple as that. He said that Superman and such things are what attract people to them. “Hagrid was always clearly the good guy wasn’t he?”

According to Belinda Wright, his UK agent, Coltrane statement, Coltrane survived his children, Spencer, and Alice, their mother Rhona Gemmell, and his sister Annie Rae.
