MIT Researchers Develop Self-replicating Robots Equipped with Intelligence

In a statement, Neil Gershenfeld, MIT Professor and Director of the CBA said that building structures requires intelligence. “The idea of structural electronics emerged the ability to make voxels that transmit data and power as well as power.

These voxels are both the robot and the parts of the robot being built

They can be combined on larger structures. Amira Abdel Rahman, a CBA doctoral student, stated in a statement that “it could build structures, or it might build another robot of the exact same size, or it may build a larger robot.”

Gershenfeld says that while the research is promising it will be many years before self-replicating robot swarms are possible.

Researchers published a paper in Nature describing their findings. They are now working with NASA, the car industry, and the aviation industry to develop the new technology.
