Major League Baseball Gets an Exciting Technology Advancement – Check out Here!

What’s the new Technology About?

The new wearable technology PitchCom is just like a wristwatch for pitchers and catchers for pitch calling. It will let them communicate what pitch to throw next and solve the problem of sign stealing and accelerate the play. In addition, the technology is very quick, handy, and a need of time.

Signaling catching is a long tradition running for 150 years, and future regular seasons will witness it. Since the start of baseball in the 19th century, catchers had used their fingers to signal the kind of pitch and its purposeful location. So, this tech is simply revitalizing the game.

How Will it Work?

PitchCom, the wristband, has nine choices overall. Namely, “four-seam high inside, curve hi middle, slider hi outside, change mid inside, sinker middle, cutter mid out, splitter low inside, knuckle low middle, two-seam low outside.” A very thin band inside the cap gives audio messages, and one can adjust its volume.

Pitchers, second basemen, shortstops, and center fielders use this audio device. During changing pictures, the manager will give the receiver the replacement picture. One can use receivers and transmitters only on the field. Its use during games in clubhouses, dugouts, or bullpen is not allowed.

Sign stealing became very common; as you may remember, The Houston Astros used a camera and banged a trash can to alert their batters to pitch types. They got a penalty for the act, and it was the 2017 World Series title. So, PitchCom was a necessity, and it has various advantages like:

  • It speeds up the match, as it reduces the amount of time between pitches
  • There will be no signal stealing in the games.
  • Also, it avoids unexpected crossover that leads to the catcher suddenly taking a fastball on the face mask.
  • Also, it’s great when the audience is too loud.

Latest Remarks of Chris Marinak, MLB’s Chief Strategy and Operations Officer

He said that many clubs used this technology for the first time in the spring training session. So, check out here, Yankees using wearables in the Spring season and how it’s changing the game. He further added that by observing the matches, he noticed that it improved the game’s pace as the pitcher can get the sign before he walks back on the rubber and is ready to throw.

Also, he added, “I’m not sure every team will use it. I think it’s a personal preference, and it’s certainly not mandated.” But it will be available during the season and postseason, which we think will be a big positive for the game’s pace.”

Bonus Tips

PitchCom is great news for MLB and baseball fans. Soon, every team and club will adopt this technology as it does not have any downside. It’s great news for players and the fans. So, gear up yourself for the next season to witness a successful technology at MLB.
