Lady Gaga asked Liza Minnelli to present Best Picture at the Oscars

Minnelli was invited to a concert at Madison Square Garden by Gaga in 2012, as part of her HBO documentary special. She called out to Minnelli from the audience during the show, citing her as an inspirational figure in her career.

Gaga’s moment at Minnelli’s 94th Oscars is the latest in a long line of public appearances Gaga has made with her long-time collaborator, jazz legend Tony Bennett – who is currently suffering from Alzheimer’s — during the last year. This includes CBS’ concert special Last Time.

Bennett was told by Gaga that Bennett had been a witness to her talent, generosity, creativity, kindness and service throughout the years. As the crowd cheered, she took Bennett’s arm and accompanied him outside of the frame. She said, “Mr. Bennett it would be my honour to escort your off-stage,”
