Japan’s Honda and Sony Collaborate for New Electric Vehicles

Sony unrolled the SUV-type prototype of electric vehicles at the beginning of the year. In addition, it disclosed a new arm Sony Mobility Inc. to find potential partners in creating Sony-branded cars. Created in partnership with Robert Bosch GmbH and  Magna International Inc.,  the concept car exhibits Sony technology’s core strengths of sensors and entertainment.

Sony is also a leader in producing sensors for self-aware and autonomous vehicles. Sony’s shares fell 3.2% in Tokyo, whereas Honda’s declined to 4.5%. Honda Motor Co. was Japan’s first automaker who publicly stated that it would completely shut gasoline-powered vehicle sales by 2040. Last year, CEO “Toshihiro Mibe” revealed in a Bloomberg News interview that the company would find alliances to create EV’s ambitious shift.

Also, the company has joined forces with General Motors Co. to develop two EVs to debut in the US market in 2024. While that collaboration will aim to mass-market EV production, the partnership with Sony will begin with small volumes.

He also reveals that Honda keeps making efforts in EV and will strike other ventures. Kenichiro Yoshida, Sony’s CEO, described Honda at the same event as an excellent partner because of its unlimited technologies for cars and airplanes. But unfortunately, the executives didn’t eliminate the potential public listing for the new collaboration.

Honda’s other ventures cover regions, including China.

The company plans to announce ten new cars within four years and enhance its partnership with Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd, ” leading battery-maker.” Honda focuses on improving its Chinese EV sales from 10,000 to 800,000 units by 2030.

Earlier, Honda stated that it would provide dollar-denominated green bonds of $2.75 billion in total for environmental initiatives use, including EVs development. The green bond offering is Honda’s first yet one of the most significant bonds issued in the US market.

From Foxcom to Xiaomi, tech leaders have collaborated with EVs to expand beyond PCs and mobile phones. Apple Inc.’s aim for the electric car has been most scrutinized, with Bloomberg News. It reports that the world’s one of the best tech firms is progressing in the sector.

The alliance between Honda and Sony will bring together the strengths of both, offering great possibilities for mobility’s future.
